Sick Pay, tax relief – just what the doctor ordered

I know you are probably thinking, what can a trip to the doctors and sick pay, tax relief all be about.  Let me explain…..

For many small businesses having staff off work sick is a pain.

  • You have to juggle everyone’s work so that deadlines are met and customer service doesn’t slip.
  • And then of course you have to pay them statutory sick pay (SSP) once they have been absent from work for four days.
  • To add insult to injury you can’t reclaim any of the SSP paid since 6 April 2014.

Clearly its bad news for your business if you have, or expect to have, an employee off sick for 28 days.
However, did you know that from 1st January 2015 the first £500 of such treatment costs per employee is now a tax deductible cost for your business ?

The change is designed to help businesses afford to pay for treatments which then help the member of staff get back to work.

  • The treatment can include a range of interventions such as talking therapies for stress conditions or physiotherapy for physical injuries.

A word of warning – in order to qualify for the tax relief the medical treatment must be recommended in writing as part of an occupational health assessment undertaken by a healthcare professional. One way to get such an assessment for your employee is to apply through the website: click here
