As 2021 draws to a close, for lots of people time has been a real issue and the ability to work on the business has been in short supply.

In this video Kim will give you some ideas about how you can manage your time to greater effect.

Time Management

I often hear from prospects and customers I just don’t have enough time to get everything done. The fact is we all have the same amount of time. What’s very different is how we choose to use our time. How focused and ruthless we are at cutting through stuff and allowing distractions and procrastination to get in the way and we are all guilty of that!! I know I am…..

Applying the delegate and elevate tool will help you make more effective use of your time. However equally important is the people who work for you or who report to you must equally be doing their jobs well. If not, you’ll be doing their job for them as well as your own.

We have all experienced the issues of a looming deadline and not much time, so our thinking is it’s just easier if I do it myself. How many times have I heard that, it only takes a few seconds or a few minutes, so I’d just rather do it myself.

However if we dig down and analyse, this process is done over and over and when you add up all the time over several months or years it becomes a massive amount of time you could have had to work on rather than in your business!!

I often hear from business owners when they have new starters but they are not training them on certain tasks because I just don’t have the time, its quicker if I do it myself. The trouble is when training any new member of staff the truth is it does take time, but if you don’t train them they will never be able to do the role. That’s why it’s such a good idea to have “Standard Operating Procedures” that help someone to have a go at a task and can be amended and revised as appropriate. That way it shouldn’t take as much time. But remember, short term pain for long term gain!!!

Also attitude is massive……You need each of your direct reports especially in a small team to:-

  • Get It
  • Want it
  • Have the capacity to do it

What do we mean by this, well it’s quite a simple concept really

Get it – they must have a thorough understanding of the ins and outs of the job

Want it – they have a genuine desire to do the job, they’re not being coerced, cajoled, threatened or given extra compensation to want the job

Capacity to do it – there are 4 types of capacity

  • Emotional – the heart to feel what others are feeling, empathy
  • Intellectual – the brains for critical thinking and problem solving
  • Physical – the stamina and tenacity to finish what you start
  • Time – the self-discipline to organize and use their time well

Can you hand on heart say your direct reports and/or key members of your team Get it, Want it and have the Capacity to do it? If not you will never truly be able to let go to do what you truly love and are great at doing….and should be doing to move your business forward!!! Maybe you need to find some more of the right people?

How can you improve them if they are the right people……..give them responsibility and ask them to accept the accountability that goes with it. So, what are you waiting for…hold yourself accountable to do the things you love to do and are truly great at doing. You’ll be happier, you’ll start growing and so will your people.
